Lucy's Story

Getting a website to deliver

The desired results shouldn’t be a hard slog. Choosing the right partner for the job helped Lucy transform her business and marketing.

You should never feel overwhelmed by the solution. You should feel heard.

When your website is holding your brilliant business back, and you don’t know which way to turn, the last thing you need is someone bamboozling you with complex, technical conversations and costly proposals.

That’s precisely how Lucy Mann, founder of Gunpowder Consulting, felt before she met an incredibly kind person who uttered the words she most needed to hear – “I’ve got the perfect agency to help you.”

Lucy came to Anorak Cat feeling stuck.

She’d been supporting digital marketing agencies with their new business for the last ten years and hosting a successful podcast for six.

Everything was going great, guns (excuse the pun!), but her website didn’t reflect this. “My old website wasn’t fit for purpose. It was something I’d done really, really cheaply when I set up the consultancy, but it was stuck in a WordPress template, and I couldn’t change anything. And I’d spent three years not knowing how to fix it.”

Lucy went around in circles, speaking to people she knew at creative agencies, but there was a problem. The conversations quickly got complicated, and suddenly, what she wanted to do, integrating her podcast and website, looked really expensive. And this is often part of the problem.

Larger agencies are set up to help much bigger businesses; they simply don’t know how to service small clients.

Lucky for Lucy, we do. In fact, we pride ourselves on understanding small businesses and helping their owners feel listened to because it’s the world we’re in too.

You understood what i was trying to achieve with the website, what i was trying to achieve with my business.
I immediately had the confidence that you knew how to get me there.

Collaboration matters when it’s just you running a business

When you’re the sole owner of your business, making decisions can feel scary.

Lucy was concerned that anything she did to the website might break something with the podcast, and all the work she’d put into creating content and building a following would be lost.

So we approached change differently, working with Lucy step by step to help her feel comfortable and confident with our process and where we were at with it.

Like all our customers, our proposal for Lucy was based on one of our fixed-priced packages.

When you invest in a website, one of the scariest things can be not knowing how much it will end up costing, whether there will be lots of hidden extras, and what you will get in the end.

So we do things differently, providing complete transparency so there are zero surprises along the way.

And something which Lucy says was a real bonus is our ongoing care plan that we include in every package.

There was never any ambiguity, no thinking…

‘I don’t know what’s happening; should i have done something? I don’t know if this website is going to materialise’ it was all just very, very clear and collaborative.

“It’s a little tiny payment that goes out every month, but it’s for peace of mind knowing that someone understands what’s going on with my website and is looking after it. That’s worth it to be able to sleep at night!”

Marketing that not only achieves excellent results
– but is easier and more fun

Lucy’s website has been up and running for a year, and we’re delighted to hear how well it’s performing.

She’s regularly getting inquiries through the site, which she never got before, and she can track a clear link between releasing a podcast episode and people booking a discovery call.

She’s even secured a sponsor for her show and credits her professional-looking web presence in helping add to her credibility.

If you know your website is suboptimal,

You’re less likely to do really good marketing. Where as now, because i know my website is great, I’m proud to create content and send people there, and it’s changed the way i think about my marketing.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your website and are feeling stuck, just like Lucy was, you might want to follow her advice:

“If the agencies you’re talking to are blinding you with jargon or cannot articulate your challenge back to you, then they’re probably not the right partner. Choose a partner who really does understand what you’re trying to achieve. Understand it’s going to be collaborative, and trust your gut. And, if you don’t understand something, ask. It’s not because your knowledge isn’t sufficient; it’s because the agency hasn’t explained it well enough.”

If you don’t understand something, ask. It’s not because your knowledge isn’t sufficient; it’s because the agency hasn’t explained it well enough.
